Dr. Maureen Newton is professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Jacksonville State University (JSU) located in Jacksonville, Alabama. She has been at JSU since 1999 and prior to that she was a practicing social worker in East Tennessee, with experience in substance abuse, health care, aging, rural social work, and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Newton attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for her BSSW, Florida State University for her MSW, and the University of Tennessee for her doctorate in social work. She also received a certificate in gerontology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is licensed in Tennessee as a Clinical Social Worker and in Alabama as a Certified Social Worker. Dr. Newton has also coordinated the outcomes and assessment process for the social work program at her university for approximately 15 years. In addition, she continues to engage in scholarly work related to social work and aging, social work in rural communities, and social work education. Dr. Newton is committed to excellence in social work education and practice.
